Kon is breadfruit that has been cooked and pounded by a po, a tool made from coral and it is pounded on a nuf(carved wood). It is often eaten as a side dish and can be enjoyed by various ages.
After being pounded, coconut milk is added to the breadfuit to create mwatun. The taste of the mwatun makes it a delightful dish that many people enjoy.
These dishes of breadfruit were made by the early people of Chuuk, located in the Western Pacific. There was an abundance of breadfruit trees growing on the islands of Chuuk and due to this, it became the main staple of our diets. Little by little, many of our ancestors started coming up with different ways to prepare it, whether it being pounded, aged, or simply boiled. Then those ancestors began passing this culinary tradition down, generation to generation. Fast forward to now, these dishes of breadfruit are still main parts of Chuukese diets which is why at 691 Ulu Express we only make the finest products to ensure that you may not only be satisfied with the taste, but you may also experience a taste of our culture and history.
